AbstractThe thesis addresses the role Streptomyces might play in human disease via its genetic adaptations to the environment of the human lungs; namely, its employment of hemolysins. It does so by providing a literature overview of what is known about the lungs' microbiome and pathogens, and adds to the evidence regarding Streptomyces' hemolytic potential by proving that hemolysin-related genes are expressed in TR42's genome. The thesis? aim is to add to the evidence regarding Streptomyces? hemolytic potential by proving that hemolysin- related genes are expressed in the genome of TR42, a strain of Streptomyces extracted from the lungs of miners. The thesis does so by searching for the homologues of hemolysis activating genes in TR42, using PCR and electrophoresis.
