Teorií románu se zabýval György Lukács, pro kterého je román pokračováním epopeje; jeho vrchol je v 19. století, ve kterém vznikala vrcholná díla světového realismu. Michail Bachtin považuje počátek evropské románové tvorby již v renesanci, kdy napsal svůj román F. Rabelais. M. Bachtin zde objasnil jazykovou výstavbu románu na základě smíchové kultury. Za novou formu moderního románu považuje dílo M. F. Dostojevského, jehož román nazývá polyfonním. Milan Kundera považuje za vrcholné období románu 18. století, které přímo navazuje na renesanci. Za nové představitele moderního románu považuje F. Kafku, H. Brocha a R. Musila.. -- Abstract: The novel is still the most popular literary genre. Theory of the novel dealt with György Lukács, for whom continuing epic novel, with the top of the 19th century in which the world was created masterpieces of realism. Mikhail Bakhtin considered the beginning of the european novel in the works for the Renaissance, when he wrote his novel by F. Rabelais. Bakhtin linguistic construction are illustrated novel based on the laughter culture. The new form of the modern novel considers the work of of Dostoevsky, whose novel is called polyphonic. Milan Kundera considers the novel of the 18th century, which is directly connected to the Renaissance. The new leaders of the modern novel, considered by F. Kafka, H. Broch, R. Musil.
