Cílem diplomové práce je zaměřit se na význam předměstí a střední třídy v díle těchto dvou autorů. Záměrem této práce je také vymezit záměr a metody použití humoru v povídkách Cheevera a Thurbera. Tato diplomová práce je rozdělena na dvě hlavní části zabývající se každým z těchto autorů samostatně se zahrnutím jejich závěrečného porovnání. Toto srovnání je založeno na vlastní čtenářské zkušenosti a také analyzuje jaký význam má Cheeverovo a Thurberovo dílo pro současného čtenáře. This diploma thesis provides an analysis of the humor in the selected short stories of James Thurber and John Cheever, the American authors of the twentieth century. The aim of the diploma thesis is to focus on the signification of suburbs and middle-class in the work of these two authors. The intention of this thesis is also to define the purpose and methods of employing humor in the short stories of Cheever and Thurber. This diploma thesis is divided into two main parts dealing with each of these authors separately with the concluding comparison included. The comparison is based on own reading experience and it also analyzes the significance of Cheever and Thurber´s work for the contemporary readers. Another responsib.
