Zanalyzujeme vývoj voleb do EP, jejich systém a postupnou transformaci až do voleb v roce 2014 včetně problému stále klesající volební účasti. V tomto směru bude kladen důraz na volební systémy v různých zemích EU a jejich reciproční komparaci. Kromě složení, pravomocí a činností EP zmíníme také technické aspekty této instituce (organizace, plenární zasedání, summity, výbory) a zodpovíme i zásadní otázky s tématem EP spojené: proč byl jako oficiální sídlo zvolen francouzský Štrasburk, proč se zvolení poslanci sdružují do evropských politických sdružení a jaké frakce jsou ty největší? Prostor věnujeme též aktuální Fox-Häfnerova zprávě o jednotném sídle EP a její reflexi ve světových médiích. V další části práce nastíníme možnou institucionální revizi EP v případě vstupu zemí jako Albánie, Islandu či Turecka. Volnější kapitola pak popíše význam a princip lobbingu v EP a jeho vliv na fungování EU. This thesis Significance of the European Parliament in Historical and Political Development (from its inception to the present) is concerned with a complex historical and political development of the European Parliament (EP), as it is the only one directly elected part of the European Union, starting with its creation to the present date (year 2015). In this work, the author analyses the development of the election to the EP, their system and gradual transformation until the elections in 2014, including the problem with constantly decreasing electoral participation. In this regard, emphasis will be placed on electoral system in different countries of EU and their reciprocal comparison. Apart from the composition, powers and functions of the EP, the author also mentions the technical aspects of this institution (organization, plenary sessions, summits, committees) and even answers the crucial questions connected with the topic of the European Parliament: Why was Strasbourg, France chosen as the official residence? Why did elected deputies organize to European political associations and what fractions are the biggest ones? The author also focuses on the current Fox-Häfner´s report about uniform residence of EP and its reflection in the world media. In the next part of the work, a possible institutional revision of EP is suggested, such as the entry of countries as Albania, Iceland or Turkey. An independent chapter describes the meaning and principles of lobby in the EP and its influence on EU's functions.
