The presented thesis is the very first complete biography of the count Frantisek Thun-Hohenstein (1809-1870), one of the most important protagonists of the Bohemian artistic life in the second third of the 19th century. Before, only partial studies had been addressed specifically to this personage, as the researchers tended to focus on other members of the Děčín's family branch, above all his famous brother Lev and his nephew František Thun, who once was a governor. This study is based on interdisciplinary concept, combining most importantly theoretical approaches of social history, historical anthropology, art history and memory studies and benefitting from rich variety of sources. In the first place, sources of personal nature have been examined, especially Thun's own and those of his closest relatives. Official and proclamatory sources enabled to depict Thun's public activity in leagues and unions. The author focused on two main aspects. First of them is Thun's private sphere, including his childhood, education and travelling in the context of family strategies. Therefore, a lot of attention was paid to his parents, namely his mother Theresie, born Brühl, and his father František Antonín Thun. Especially the father - son relationship was crucial as it was affected by personal conflict and generational gap within the social changes of the 19th century. The most important point was Thun's mésalliance: in the 1846 he married his mother's chambermaid Magdalena König and subsequently lost his hereditary rights to the family trust, although he was a firstborn son. The mésalliance also ruined his relationship to the father, who never accepted neither his son's wife nor his family. In this thesis Thun's unusual decision was examined not only with the respect to its social and material consequences, but the author also tried to determine the causes. Those were found in Thun's very education and childhood, when his personal values were formed, based in traditional values of aristocratic mentality and principles of bolsanism, in which he was raised. Important role played as well his unhappy love to english singer Adelaide Kemble and own ambitions and imaginations of future, which were not matching the responsibilities of an heir of the family trust. Second line of focus of the submitted thesis is the public functioning of František Thun, such as his work on the social and filantropic field and his political carrier before and during the revolution of 1848. However, the major emphasis was placed upon Thun's activities related to the fine arts and historic preservation. The outcome is not only an overview of Thun's engagements in the official institutions and societies (e.g. Society of Patriotic Friends of Art, Society for the Finishing of the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague), but also a depiction of contemporary art patronage, mechanism of the assignment of the official contracts and their processing. Thun as a member of the committee and later as a president of the Society of Patriotic Friends of Art as well as the secretary of Fine Arts League attracted wide range of artists, experts and art lovers. This circle influenced in an important and decisive manner the visual art of Prague or more precisely of all the Bohemia in the era before March 1948. František Thun's biography significantly contributes to the knowledge of the Bohemian aristocracy and her position within the bourgeois era and in the period of modernization
